I'm so excited to invite you all to learn about weaving and textile traditions from Southern Philippines through a pop-up I've organized this Sunday. Hope to see you there!
EXPLORE Filipino weaving and textile traditions from Southern Philippines and support weavers and artisans continue to share their stories. The pop-up will include a selection of handmade and exquisitely crafted textile-based products. Yakang Yaka supports indigenous tribes through a collaboration with Habi Textile Council.
MEET Kelly Mortensen of Yakang Yaka and Cynthia Alberto, weaving and textile expert and founder of Weaving Hand, a healing arts foundation and weaving studio located in Brooklyn, NY.
Yakang Yaka x Weaving Hand will discuss and explore ideas around developing newer modernized looms for weavers to help become more efficient, sustainable and a collective that bridges traditional techniques with innovative ideas in contemporary textile arts.
ENJOY organic coffee from the Philippines and delicious Filipino-inspired treats.
About Yakang Yaka:
Yakang Yaka Barter Shop is located in the city of Makati. The shop's contributing artists have built a creative community that finds solace and strength in the practice of weaving despite economic and political challenges in the region. Together they explore both contemporary and traditional weaving techniques.
“We want to keep the tradition of weaving alive through contemporary designs. The weavers are the storytellers through their traditional designs. We assist them by telling their stories through our contemporary outlook.” — Kelly Marian Mortensen
